Tech Disruption

Tech Disruption was a new term I heard on the Squared Online course this week.

I should go for a quick recovery and say that I knew of the theory I just didn’t know there was a name for it. Tech Disruption, there I know what it is now!

I spend time looking at various data sources and trying to look at products and services through the eyes of the target consumer for my clients. Get an idea of where these people meet and engage and how this may change as emerging technology turns the marketing industry on its head. Now I know I can label it easily as Tech Disruption research!

I find tech disruption (rinsing it now I know what it’s called!) a fascinating subject. Looking at what people do how they do it and what influences the trend changes.

The recent disaster to hit Japan with earthquake, tsunami and nuclear meltdown left their infrastructure in disarray. Businesses and people were left without power, telephones and all the ‘traditional’ infrastructure we have come to rely on in daily life.

Everyone in Japan adapted quickly using the Internet and other means to carry on until services could be restored.

During the recovery of their infrastructure they have looked closely at their IT and decided to move it to cloud based solutions. Data is available in the event of major disaster giving them the resilience they need (unless Amazon has problems with their EBS (Elastic Block Store) again).

Is this tech disruption?

As a result of huge a natural disruption to Japans tech and infrastructure they are left evaluating how they can avoid the same disruption again.

I think we are amidst a huge tech disruption right now. Mobile and smart phones are a part of our daily life, we pick them up and carry them around with us. We personalise them with covers and bling but what will happen when smart watches, wearable devices whatever you want to call them are released? Will this just be a fad or will technology embed itself even further into our daily lives?

OK my dad turns his mobile on only when he wants to use it yet my teenage kids have them surgically attached at all times. The eldest two have a mix of devices, my son has an iPhone, iPod, Mac mini and iPad, my eldest daughter uses a Blackberry mobile and HP laptop, the youngest uses a Nexus, desktop PC and a rubbish phone as he loses them a lot. A broad mix of devices and they use them for a wide variety of things, from arranging parties and nights out to finding out how to pass a troublesome part of an Xbox game.

I am eager to see the MASSIVE changes to the mobile marketing and mcommerce industries when people are not only carrying their connected tech they are wearing it!

Google and the other PPC platforms are working hard find new ways to to market to mobile devices. I recently had a conversation with Google and they are using new methods to target mobile devices with ads.

Only time will tell if wearable tech like the iWatch and Google Glass will be embraced by the masses! If it does what impact will this new digital ecosystem have on existing digital marketing?

I like to think of myself as an avid PC Gamer, I wouldn’t consider myself a hardcore gamer but I have been know to spend some time blowing stuff up on Borderlands 2, Bio Shock Infinite, Far Cry 3 or any of the other top titles I have in my Steam library. Just finished Saints Row IV

My gaming days go back to the dawn of time!

I first got hooked on gaming as a youngster with the Binatone TV Master from the 70’s (yes I am that old). We couldn’t afford one but my dads friend had one which I played the whole time we went to visit.

I have witnessed almost all the advancements in computer technology from the very beginning with my first Sinclair ZX81. The games were loaded from normal audio tapes (created some 50 years ago now) for what seemed like hours, the graphics and games in general were terrible by today’s standards. I moved onto the Sinclair Spectrum although I really wanted the Commodore 64.

I didn’t really get into computer gaming again until I bought my first ‘real’ personal computer, a Pentium 75 computer. If my memory is correct it set me back about £2,700 way back then. It wasn’t too long after I wanted to start opening it up and poking around inside to see what I could upgrade.

After breaking a few expensive bits I was supposed to be upgrading I quickly got the hang of Windows and performing upgrades without breaking things (too often). I have always built my own computers and my current work horse is built with PC gaming and work.

Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate x64

CPU: Intel Pentium i7 3.9GHz

RAM: 32 GB

Graphics: nVidia GeoForce GTX 650 Ti

256GB SSD

A HUGE difference to my first computer!

So where is PC gaming going?

I have stayed true to my roots and kept my PC. OK so it isn’t exactly standard, along with the beast under the bonnet (Intel i7) I also have 4 24″ screens so I can see what’s going on.

The kids use the consoles and I play on my gaming/work rig. Everyone has a PC, Mac or laptop for homework with a mixture of Apple and Android tablets thrown in for good measure. The rule is no one uses MY PC!

The Future is? Virtual Reality headset!

Now I tried something I thought was a VR headset a few years back. It plugged into the back of your graphics card. They looked pretty cool and Terminatorish but just flashed and didn’t really bring the game to life.

That was quite a few years ago now and things have moved on. Techradar posted an article on the latest in VR technology here.

The Oculus Rift headset is reported to change the face of gaming. Cool!

I just hope that unlike the efforts of Nintendo with its 3DS and other gaming fads that there will be a long list of game developers falling over themselves to make these VR games. And what of the cost of these VR games?

Being a geek techie I have a vision of the future, sitting with my VR headset and VR gloves simply navigating my way around the evolved VR Internet! An object based Virtual Reality where simply gesturing with my gloves will open, close or take me to the information I am looking for.

Come on Google! We’re waiting

Some funny reactions to wearing the Oculus Rift VR headset.
